"Cheerleader" Singer OMI Talks Finding His Sound on 'Got Ur #'

Jamaican reggae-pop artist OMI made waves after his single "Cheerleader" topped the Billboard Hot 100 seemingly overnight. While fans may be familiar with the song's infectious beat, they may not be too familiar with OMI himself. The 28-year-old stopped by Got Ur # to chat about his musical background and what shaped his unique sound.

Having developed a love for lyrical composition at a young age, OMI cites rap and hip hop as his early influences. "When I started going to the studio, I realized that there was another aspect of music that I needed to grasp before I could pursue this as a career, and that's where the whole singing comes in. I started experimenting, I started having a feel of my voice and knowing my range," he explains.

He also reveals that he doesn't drink or smoke, but prefers a different sort of outlet.
