Miley may have brought twerking to the mainstream, but Mastodon is bringing it to metal.
After their awesomely nerdy "High Road" video, the Atlanta rockers have unleashed another unexpected visual with "The Motherload," the latest single off their Once More Round the Sun LP. Sure, the video kicks off like your typical heavy-metal affair: Scenes of the band slaying in a dimly-lit stage alternate with disturbing, occult images of what look like freak show performers hobbling around the backstage of a circus. So far, your typical metal vid.
But then...twerking! And not one, not two, but dozens of video-vixen booties shaking amid the creepy freaks. The juxtaposition between the snake-skin woman and a thong-clad dancer is as captivating as it is bizarre, making for one of the most unexpectedly brilliant videos of the year. Just wait for a gaggle of twerkers to join the band in a garage performance at the end.
