FUSE TV - Matthew Hemerlein Talks New Moniker Lo Fang, Touring With Lorde

In this Fuse News exclusive, host Liz Walaszczyk sits down with Lo Fang—aka Matthew Hemerlein—to discuss touring with Lorde, the technical properties of music, and his love of the medium.

“She is a really great presence on stage and she sounds awesome. You can really tell that people are really there for her and her record,” the musician explained. “She has really let people into her world and everyone is like, they are all like, it is wonderful to watch. It is like an ecosystem.”

Hemerlein has been playing music for what seems like forever—being about to play five different instruments by the time he was a teenager.“It was a huge, huge importance place on understanding music as a language in of itself and there was never any “owness” put on me to like be in a more popular sphere of music… Anything I was doing, when I was teaching music, that was great because I was really happy and it was having a positive impact.”

It was through that music education that Hemelein was able to launch his career. “A lot of kids that I am still friends with on Facebook, they still love the record. They are really into it,” He said. “My whole process when I was teaching music was I wanted them to bring me songs that they wanted to learn and that was a jumping off point to then work in aspects of music theory into the lesson and show them other songs that I, or artists that I was aware of, that they weren’t aware of. I thought they would connect because that is the most exciting thing… just sharing music that you love that you think other people will love.”

He stays humble. “Once it was taken on that I might potentially have my own locker at Fuse that that is when I realized that it could be real.”

The up-and-comer  concludes with what music really means t to him. “I think I just like get a kick out of sound. It just has a really strong affect on me. It’s like you know it really calms me down and gives me energy. It is like a drug or something.”
