Tamar Braxton: "I Was Disappointed in R&B for a While"

With a loud personality and hilarious catchphrases, Tamar Braxton was the standout star on WE tv reality show Braxton Family Values. But now the Maryland native is garnering attention for her new album, Love & War, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 this week. Toni Braxton's youngest sister stopped by Fuse HQ to talk about the new record and the state of R&B today.

"I was really going through something with my relationship [with record exec husband Vincent Herbert]," she says of the writing process for Love & War. "I had to get it out. I decided to write and sing about it. 

"It's so funny because you think you're going through things alone. But when people listen, they say, 'Oh my gosh, I had the same feeling about [singles] 'All the Way Home' or 'Love & War'!"

Along with Braxton, artists like Miguel, Janelle Monae, the Weekend and Frank Ocean have returned R&B to the top of the charts. The 36-year-old credits that to honest songwriting.

"Now, R&B is on the rise because we're not afraid to talk about what's really happening in our personal relationships," she explains. "The more that we're honest, the more that the audience can identify and take away your experience and apply it to their life in a positive way."
