Among the many Bonnaroo highlights last summer, few were bigger or more surprising than the return of D'Angelo, who headlined the festival's annual SuperJam Last June alongside Questlove, bassist Pino Palladino, the Roots guitarist Captain Kirk and others.
Sadly and shockingly for fans who weren't there, scarce video exists of D'Angelo's return. Festival organizers, though, have one-upped any shaky-cam footage you may have by releasing the first of a four-part series going behind-the-scenes and onstage during the singer's mesmerizing, all-covers set.
Part one above, titled "Origins", finds Questlove backstage discussing the performance and the group nailing Prince's "My Summertime Thang" (not part of The Purple One's SXSW set, but an insane version nonetheless).
Organizers have released the titles of other performances (below) and will be rolling out the videos every other week. Rest assured we're on it once each one of these is released.
Part II: Getting The Band Back Together: Featuring "Pride and Vanity" by the Ohio Players
Part III. Hit It and Quit It: Featuring "Funky Dollar Bill" and "Hit It and Quit It" by Parliament Funkadelic
Part IV. The Return of D'Angelo: Featuring "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" by the Beatles
