GRAMMY Nominations Concert 2014: Katy Perry Goes Acoustic, Taylor Swift Strips and More
The 2014 Grammy nominations concert went off without a hitch Friday night. Well, there was that one hitch when host LL Cool J had to improvise with model Candice Swanepoel. But other than that, no hitches.
Let's get into the performances, shall we?
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis kicked off the hour-long special, performing their 2012 hit "Thrift Shop," and Macklemore sported (what else) a thrifted fur coat. Ryan Lewis jumped on the decks and sported his usual accessory: a really handsome face.
Taylor Swift took the stage live from Australia to perform "I Knew You Were Trouble" after the Song of the Year nominees were announced. She was wearing a half curtains/half dress. Just kidding, it was all dress. But then Renaissance-looking backup dancers ripped it off! To reveal a black body suit! Which she should always wear, let's be honest.
The stand-out performance of the night goes to Keith Urban and Miguel's short (but stellar) sultry duet of Bill Withers' classic "Ain't No Sunshine." FYI: Miguel didn't have a shirt on under his jacket. No one seemed to mind.
Katy Perry beamed herself in from Toronto for an acoustic performance of her smash Prism single, "Roar." "I hope that this song has inspired you guys," Katy said about the Song of the Year-nominated track. "And I hoped it helped bring out that self strength that you need to go through your days when they get a little hard." Katy won Miss Congeniality of the Grammy nominations concert.
Lorde, whose name we didn't even know last year, continued her 2013 winning streak by taking the stage to perform her ubiquitous hit "Royals" in a cool black and white outfit in front of minimal images of cool but creepy guys without shirts on. It was... cool.
Finally, Robin Thicke and T.I. closed out the night with special guests Earth, Wind & Fire (!!!) for a funkified rendition of their many times-nominated "Blurred Lines." Thankfully, no letter balloons or naked models were used or harmed during the making of this performance.
Check out the full list of Grammy nominees, and tune in January 26 at 8 p.m. ET for the 2014 Grammys air live from L.A. on CBS. Before the big night, the Grammys will honor Carole King, who will receive the MusiCares 2014 Person of the Year award on January 24. The ceremony will feature performances from Lady Gaga, the Dixie Chicks, Steven Tyler, James Taylor, Bette Midler and Jason Mraz.
