Lily Allen's Comeback Single "Hard Out Here" Tackles Twerking, Sexism
After becoming a mother of two and taking a four-year break from the music industry, Lily Allen has not lost any of her edge. Thank God.
She's back with a brand new snarky single and semi-NSFW video, "Hard Out Here," and it's a pop-perfect feminist anthem.
"If I told you 'bout my sex life/ You'd call me a slut/ When boys be talkin' 'bout their b-tches/ No one's makin' a fuss/ There's a glass ceiling to break/ Uh huh, there's money to make/ And now it's time to speed it up 'cause I can't move at this pace."
And then, there's the chorus: "Sometimes it's hard to find the words to say/ I'll go ahead and say them anyway/ Forget your balls and grow a pair of t-ts/ It's hard, it's hard, it's hard out here for a b-tch." Yes, girl.
In the video, Lily is surrounded by twerking backup dancers, which is clearly meant to be satirical, but also a slight jab at Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop." (Or Miley's entire 2013 in general.) And the letter balloons (that spell something we won't type out) are clearly a dig at Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines."
The moral of the story: Don't f-ck with Lily Allen. And motherhood only makes you fiercer.
