Jordin Sparks Returns With Breezy R&B-Pop Single "Skipping a Beat"
Since releasing her Battlefield album in 2009, Jordin Sparks had initially launched a comeback for her new record with empowering, electro-pop single "I Am Woman" in early 2011. It failed to ignite the charts and the Phoenix native went back to the drawing board. The time off produced "Skipped a Beat," which proves the 23-year-old still has a knack for catchy, vocally-impressive R&B-pop offerings along the lines of Top 10 hits "No Air" and "Battlefield".
Her latest one jumps from its bouncy piano-led verses to the snare-heavy electro-pop chorus amid metaphors about being head over heels in love. "You make my heart skip like I'm playing hop scotch / Hope I'm the one you want to put the rock on," she coos, probably with boyfriend (and fellow pop star) Jason DeRulo in mind.
The track's shining moment comes when Sparks lets out a big melismatic belt, reminding listeners why America voted her to win the sixth season of American Idol in '07. Look out for more new tracks from Sparks—including a duet with DeRulo titled "Before It Breaks."
