Mac Miller isn't sweating Kanye West and J. Cole, who both drop new records the same day as Miller's sophomore LP—he even told Fuse "I don't give a f-ck about the competition." Maybe that's because his new album, Watching Movies With the Sound Off, features collabos from hip hop's hottest new talents, including Earl Sweatshirt, Action Bronson, ScHoolboy Q and Tyler, the Creator.
The Pittsburgh MC calls the guests "friends," which is a key ingredient for a great collabo.
"Earl comes over all the time. We said, 'Let's create something new,'" Miller explains. "When these people are your friends, it's exciting because you're not thinking, 'Oh, this is my ScHoolboy Q song.' It shouldn't be made to fit them, it shouldn't be made to fit me. It should be us creating something that doesn't exist. That's what a real good collaboration does."
The 21-year-old rapper also says it's friends who offer the best criticism.
"Tyler heard the album and he's like, 'Damn this is depressing,'" Miller says of the LP, which includes the religion-contemplating track "S.D.S." "We need to brighten it up... That's why our song is so over the top and comical." His collabo with Tyler, the Creator, a bonus track called "O.K.," fittingly opens with a burp.
