Cassadee Pope Channels Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift on Debut Single "Wasting All These Tears"
The Voice's Season 3 champ Cassadee Pope just released her debut single, "Wasting All These Tears," and guess what? It's better than anything she ever performed on TV. Listen above.
Pope is known for emotional renditions of country hits—her cover of Miranda Lambert's "Over You" peaked at No. 25 on the Hot 100. But on "Wasting All These Tears," she mixes Taylor Swift's youthful, country-pop sensibilities with the pop-rock accessibility of Avril Lavigne.
Soft guitar strums and banjo plucks open the track before Pope delivers the haunting first line: "I tried to find you at the bottom of a bottle." The chorus hits hard as Pope wails, "Oh finally I'm through, wasting all these tears on you!" It's a reminder that, yes, she deserved to win The Voice.
The singing competition hasn't had much luck launching superstars—Season 1 winner Javier Colon's debut LP peaked at No. 134 and Season 2's Jermaine Paul hasn't even released one yet. But that could finally change with the season three champ.
The 23 year old will debut the track on TV tonight on The Voice. And it's already burning up on iTunes, securing the No. 15 spot on the iTunes Top Songs chart.
Does The Voice finally have a hitmaker?
