Kanye West: "I’m the Worst Kind of Celebrity Because I Make Real Music"
At this point, an onstage rant from Kanye West has essentially become synonymous with "today's Kanye news." But when 'Ye hit the stage at a secret Adult Swim-sponsored show in New York last night, the expecting father went off on an expletive-filled rant about dropping your babies and hating the paparazzi that may be his magnum opus. And best of all, this tirade made total sense beneath the blustering veneer of a misunderstood martyr.
"I'm a terrible, terrible, terrible celebrity," West half-sang at one point during his 90-minute set. "I'm the worst kind of celebrity because all I do is make real music. All I do is sit in the studio and make real sh-t. And that's motherf--king it. I don't want nobody running up on me with no cameras, trying to sell pictures to magazines, asking me dumb ass questions and throwing me off of my focus."
To be fair, he's one of the few celebrities who can justly make this claim. West doesn't spend much time making the talk show rounds or promoting Kanye-related merchandise: He's usually holed up in a studio somewhere (Chicago, Hawaii, Paris) perfecting his next release. He's not the kind of celebrity who courts media attention and then complains about it, like a certain Canadian teen pop star who will remain nameless.
In keeping with that music-over-publicity theme, West promised he's not messing around with any skits when he plays the season finale of Saturday Night Live. "It's so funny, this guy asked me, 'When you do SNL, are you going to do a skit about the paparazzi and humanize yourself?'" Kanye recalled. "At what point did I become un-human and have to turn myself back? I ain't runnin' for office. I ain't kissing nobody's mother--king babies. I'll drop your baby and you'll sue me and sh-t. I'm trying to make some music that inspires people to be the best they can be."
Speaking of which, he did perform one of the new songs presumably off his upcoming sixth album. It's the heavily Auto-Tuned ode to Kim Kardashian (possibly called "So Awesome") he debuted at the Met Gala, but unlike that exclusive fete, someone managed to grab two minutes of the performance and upload it to YouTube. Sample Kanye's latest below and listen to his cogent rant in full above.
