Psy's New Single "Gentleman" Has Arrived
There is a ginormous amount of pressure for K-pop's king Psy to follow up with a song as massive "Gangnam Style" aka the Korean rap track that's gotten the most YouTube views ever and hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
"Gentleman" is its follow-up and while nothing can compare to the mind-blowingly captivating success that is "Gangnam Style," this song comes pretty darn close while retaining its own individuality.
Once again, we hear Psy's signature charismatic rap style over an addictive, electronic beat. "Gentleman" has a slicker production than "Gangnam Style" and sees Psy showcasing a bit more English. A highlight comes in the super-fun hook as the 35-year-old shouts, "Gonna make you sweat! Gonna make you wet! You know who I am!"
The song includes all the parts of a Psy song you've come to expect: personality-infused rap over and oh-so-danceable electro-pop production. It's giving fans of pop, K-pop and/or Psy what they want without trying to hard to pull from past success.
The Korean singer will be performing the song (and other hits) live via a YouTube stream of his April 12 Happening concert. Though if you're in the U.S., you'll need to be up early (or stay up late) as Seoul's 14 hours ahead. (That's 5:30 a.m. for you East Coasters; 2:30 a.m. for our West Coast readers).
So is "Gentleman" set to be a song that we'll parody over and over a la "Gangnam Style"? Probably not. But is that how you keep a viable music career going? Probably not (unless you're Weird Al).
