Psy Joins Madonna for Awesomely Bizarre Duet at Madison Square Garden
Madonna might not have been able to convince Lady Gaga to join her onstage, but the Material Matron nabbed an even stranger cohort for her final Madison Square Garden concert last night.
Midway through her two-hour set, Madge told New York City she was going to bust out "a song she hadn't sung in a little while." Then she and her dancers launched into the 2008 track "Give It 2 Me," causing a collective shrug to reverberate throughout MSG. After all, it was a Hard Candy highlight, but it's not exactly a rarity.
So when Korean viral star Psy rose out of the stage trapdoor a minute later—dressed in a dapper red suit and those ever-present shades—the crowd went crazy. Madonna and Psy then horse-danced their way through a mashup of "Gangnam Style" and "Give It 2 Me" that you can watch above. Believe it or not, the tunes gel surprisingly well together.
Unlike Psy's VMA stint, the Korean rapper wasn't merely there for a one-off viral video reference. After some banter with Madonna about his fashion sense and the Knicks, 2012's Man of the Year joined Madonna for a duet on one of her biggest hits, "Music."
Watching the wiggle-legged K-pop star and the Queen of Pop trade verses on her No. 1 single was unexpected, beautiful and totally bonkers. It's one of those things you'll tell your kids about 20 years from now, prompting them to ask, "What the hell are you talking about?" And you'll sagely reply, "I'm just trying to tell you what life in the year 2012 was like."
