Playlist: R.I.P. Janis Joplin
Her raspy, guttural growl has been emulated by many, but 42 years after her death, no one could ever replace Janis Lyn Joplin, the fiery Texas blues singer known as much as for her hard partying and manic live shows as her work with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Had Joplin been alive today—on what would have been her 69th birthday—no doubt she'd still be chain-smoking, swilling Jack Daniels and singing the blues.
The next best thing, though, is our Spotify playlist below, featuring 30 of the singer's best tracks. Some you definitely know. Some are lost gems. But all flaunt the distinct imprint of the 1960s' most memorable female vocalist.
