Update: Lauryn Hill Responds to Tax Evasion Charge
Update: Lauryn Hill has taken to her Tumblr to explain her side of the story regarding the government's charges of tax evasion. She writes, "My intention has always been to get this situation rectified... It was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family." Read the whole thing here.
When I saw Lauryn Hill steal the show at Hot 97 Summer Jam over the weekend, I never imagined that the first non-Summer Jam related news about her that I'd read would be that she had been charged with tax evasion! But according to The Wall Street Journal, that's exactly what has happened.
Federal prosecutors have reportedly charged Ms. Hill because she didn't file any income tax returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007. Her income from that period seems to have been derived from her tours, film and music royalties, and the four corporations she owns.
She's been ordered to appear before a federal magistrate in Newark, NJ, on June 29. Until that time, we can only bite our nails and hope that it's not true!
