Listen: Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend (Remix)" ft. 2 Chainz, Mac Miller & Asher Roth
The first single from Justin Bieber's upcoming album Believe has finally received the hip hop remix treatment it so richly deserves. And fear not, the Bieber himself doesn't spit rhymes on it (that part of the original is excised). He leaves the rapping to four-fingered ring devotee 2 Chainz and white MCs Mac Miller and Asher Roth.
Considering the original cut of "Boyfriend" already resembled a Neptunes joint with its sparse production and staccato beats, the remix isn't a reinvention of the song. 2 Chainz and Mac Miller both perform admirably, with the latter managing to give an edge to the subject matter without alienating Bieber's core preteen audience.
It's Roth, however, who steals the show on this one. His verse on Bieber's song is actually about Bieber and his high-profile girlfriend Selena Gomez. "We could be like Selena and Biebs, wild and free, a couple disobedient teens / Sneaking out to meet around like 2 o'clock in the eve / Paparazzi in the bar and we just hot in the beach."
If we're to belieb Justin's Twitter, Roth's verse was actually a last-minute addition to the remix—an inclusion that was probably boosted by the fact that Roth gave Justin and Selena a shout-out in his first verse. [Earlier today, JB tweeted: "WHAT?!??! my bro @asherroth just sent me a verse for the #BFREMIX !! crazy! adding him to it! so dope."]
What do you think of the "Boyfriend" remix? Is it SO dope? Or just regular ole dope? Are you psyched for the full album?
