Mos Def & Dead Prez Record Song for Trayvon Martin
The recent shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin has ignited a war of opinion in the United States, and now three hip hop heavyweights are stepping into the ring.
Mos Def (now going by Yasiin Bey, which isn't his birth name in case you were wondering) and Dead Prez recently recorded "Made You Die," a song about the Trayvon Martin shooting over Nas' 2002 classic "Made You Look".
In the behind-the-scenes video below, Mos Def says some incredibly powerful and potentially controversial things about the song: "If you come from poor communities, from black communities in this country, and you see a casual, systemic indifference to black life, you have to respond. It's in your own self-interest. It's not even outstanding or courageous; it's a survival issue. Either we're going to fix this or we're going to agree to be slaves."
