Missy Elliott on Her Hiatus: "My Brain Needs Time to Refresh"
If you're still listening to Missy Elliott's 2005 release The Cookbook and wondering when the hip hop genius is going to release a new album, there's good and bad news. In a recent interview with Yahoo!, Missy revealed that she doesn't have a new album coming out any time soon. But when she does drop one again, it'll be epic.
Missy released her last album nine years ago, but the "Work It" rapper isn't too worried about keeping up with today's music trends. "[The album cycle] didn't use to be [so fast]. It used to be that your album was such a classic that it could go on for two years, and then you drop another joint. But it's now like this," Missy said, snapping. "Your brain needs time to refresh! Things happen in your life where you can then write something else instead of the same three topics. Like, how many times we gonna talk about the club?"
The rapper assures fans an album "is coming," but good work takes a long time. [See: "One Minute Man."] "When I create something, it's gotta be special," Missy said. "I gotta feel like what I'm giving the fans is 100 percent and that it's game-changing. I don't just throw out microwave records."
Missy hasn't been totally off the radar in recent years, though. In 2013, she teamed up with Kelly Rowland and Fantasia for "Without Me" and K-Pop star G-Dragon for "Niliria." G-Dragon talked to about the "big endeavour" of working with Missy in an exclusive interview with Fuse News here.
