Katy Perry Premieres New Song, Opens Up About Post-Divorce Depression
After the third taste of her upcoming album Prism (the '90s club throwback, "Walking on Air"), Katy Perry hit up iTunes fest and premiered yet another new album song: "By the Grace of God," a piano ballad about her divorce from Russell Brand.
Katy sings, "Thought I wasn't enough, found I wasn't so tough/ Laying on the bathroom floor/ We were living on a fault line/ And I felt the fault was all mine/ Couldn't take it anymore." Later in the song, Katy gets really dark: "I looked in the mirror and decided to stay/ Wasn't gonna let love take me out that way."
Katy recently opened up about the track to Billboard, admitting that she had suicidal thoughts after she split from Brand. "['By the Grace of God'] is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point. I asked myself, 'Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?'... I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs."
"By the Grace of God" is listed as the last song on Prism, possibly as a thank you note to fans for getting her through her rough patch. Any time, Katy!
Prism drops October 22.
