Given their tumultuous, groundbreaking, genre-shifting and occasionally tragic 30-year history, it was probably when, not if, Beastie Boys were going to chronicle their lives and career in a a memoir. According to the New York Times, the group have signed a deal with Random House imprint Spiegel & Grau to release an unconventional memoir in fall 2015.
The Beastie Boys are “interested in challenging the form and making the book a multidimensional experience,” publisher Julie Grau told the paper. “There is a kaleidoscopic frame of reference, and it asks a reader to keep up.”
“The first words out of [member] Mike D’s mouth were, ‘I don’t want to do a straight memoir,’ ” said the group's agent Luke Janklow.
The group had been in talks for a book since before founding member Adam "MCA" Yauch was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland. May 4 will be the one-year anniversary of Yauch's death.
The as-yet-untitled memoir will be edited by hip hop journalist Sacha Jenkins, but feature contributions from other writers.
